Human Rights Protection
a. Enforcement and Protection of Human Rights: As an independent and non-partisan organisation, we deploy our expertise in creating avenues for the promotion, protection, and enforcement of human rights. We engage in projects to raise people’s awareness on human rights norms, and our platform focuses on activities targeted at monitoring private and institutional compliance with the national and international frameworks on human rights in Nigeria. Through our advocacy programmes, orientation and re-orientation campaigns, citizens – including the poor and disadvantaged groups, are given the tools to influence public policies and implement practices which directly affect social justice issues and structural causes of inequality and human right abuses. We also interface with other relevant civil society organisations, ministries, departments and agencies together with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), to assist in implementing the National Action Plan (NAP) for the promotion and protection of human rights in Nigeria. We are fully involved in addressing emerging human rights issues, some of which are focused on environmental rights, digital privacy rights, data protection rights, freedom of information among others.
b. Gender and Women’s Rights: Law Hub is committed to advancing gender equality and promoting women’s rights across various sectors. We actively engage in projects that address the unique challenges faced by women, and work towards eliminating gender-based discrimination. Our initiatives focus on empowering women economically, socially, and legally. Through targeted advocacy and awareness programmes, we aim to eradicate harmful cultural practices and stereotypes that perpetuate gender inequality. Law Hub collaborates with stakeholders to influence policy changes that safeguard women’s rights. By championing gender-responsive legislation and fostering partnerships with women’s rights organisations, we strive to create a more inclusive and equitable society. Our support for the rights of women not only aims to raise awareness, but also seeks to educate individuals about their rights, legal procedures, and available support mechanisms.
c. Rule of Law and Access to Justice: Law Hub works with other civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders to develop programmes with the effect of improving legal protection, legal awareness, legal aid, fixing inherent problems in the justice sector, such as lengthy pre-trial detention, police brutality and strengthening the linkages between informal and formal structures. We also carry out activities to ensure justice service providers offer fair, effective, transparent, accountable, and non-discriminatory services to promote access to justice, which is an essential component of rule of law.
Law Hub’s commitment to Access to Justice is demonstrated through obtaining justice for the indigent, the vulnerable, the disadvantaged or marginalised at the systemic level. We address complex social problems that impact on the lives of many Nigerians. We do this by conducting test cases and strategic litigation in the public interest and through the provision of legal aid and pro bono services, policy advice and training of public interest lawyers and other stakeholders to effectuate positive change in society.
Law Hub developed The Law Hub Legal Clinic, a Legal Aid initiative that reflects the dedication of our organisation to securing justice for indigent, vulnerable, disadvantaged, or marginalised individuals. The Legal Clinic deploys an online platform where individuals can access legal aid and pro bono services, virtually making legal assistance more accessible.
d. Digital Rights Advocacy: Law Hub is steadfast in its commitment to advocating for the protection and promotion of digital rights, ensuring that individuals’ fundamental rights are preserved in the digital era. Our advocacy efforts focus on educating citizens about their digital rights, including the right to privacy, freedom of expression, and access to information. We actively engage with government agencies to influence policy-making, pushing for robust data protection laws that prevent unauthorized surveillance and data breaches. Additionally, we collaborate with civil society organisations to combat online censorship and support initiatives that promote digital literacy.
Law Hub also partners with technology companies to ensure that their practices align with human rights standards, advocating for transparency in data handling and ethical use of artificial intelligence. Through comprehensive campaigns, workshops, and policy recommendations, we aim to empower individuals to protect their digital identities and exercise their rights confidently. By fostering a collaborative approach among stakeholders, Law Hub aspires to create a safe, open, and equitable digital environment that upholds democratic values and ensures that the benefits of digital technologies are accessible to all.
