When it comes to building skills and sharing knowledge, South-South Cooperation (SSC) is a game changer for Nigeria. This collaboration among developing countries, particularly those in the Global South, focuses on exchanging resources, technology, and expertise across various sectors, including economic development, science, and social welfare. Given their shared challenges and opportunities, such cooperation proves mutually beneficial.
Countries in the Global South, including Nigeria, are currently facing a range of crises: climate change, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19, a growing digital divide, and a significant debt distress crisis. For Nigeria, SSC presents a significant opportunity to collaborate with other developing nations to drive growth and sustainable development.
Unlike traditional aid, which typically flows from wealthier countries, SSC emphasises partnership and resource sharing among nations like Nigeria. This approach targets economic growth, technology transfer, skill development, environmental protection, reduced dependency on foreign aid, and strengthened diplomatic ties, all aimed at fostering a sustainable future.
One of the key benefits of SSC is its potential to enhance Nigeria’s economic growth through self-reliance and increased trade with other Southern countries. By engaging in SSC, Nigeria can strengthen its economy and explore new markets, reducing reliance on larger economies and connecting more deeply with regional and global markets. This opens up new avenues for trade and investment.
Technology exchange and innovation are also vital components of SSC. Many developing nations, including Nigeria, face challenges in accessing modern technology and infrastructure. Through SSC, Nigeria can learn from the technological advancements of other countries, facilitating quicker progress and a more equitable distribution of resources.
Collaboration in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and governance allows countries to develop practical and sustainable solutions to shared issues. For example, Nigeria can adopt effective agricultural practices from its partners to enhance food security and productivity.
Environmental protection is another critical area where SSC plays a significant role, especially for Nigeria, which grapples with deforestation, pollution, and climate change. By sharing eco-friendly strategies and green technologies with other nations, Nigeria can better address these pressing environmental challenges.
A significant advantage of SSC is its potential to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on foreign aid. Historically, Nigeria has depended on external financial support, which can sometimes hinder its growth. SSC seeks to promote self-reliance and economic independence, enabling Nigeria to thrive without constant external assistance.
Moreover, SSC fosters stronger relationships with other developing countries, enhancing Nigeria’s political partnerships and giving it a more prominent voice in global affairs. By working together, Nigeria and its Southern counterparts can advocate for fairer international policies and drive changes in global trade and governance that impact sustainable development.
Established in 1974, the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) supports collaboration among developing countries and within the UN system. It assists nations in designing and implementing policies and projects for SSC, facilitating the exchange of successful development solutions.
As we commemorate the International Day of South-South Cooperation, it is expedient that Nigeria leverage South-South cooperation more strategically to address her challenges. By focusing on self-reliance, technology sharing, environmental sustainability, and political collaboration, Nigeria will be able to pave the way for a more prosperous and sustainable future.
